RESUMO

1. This study investigated the effects of hydroxy trace minerals (HTM) compared to sulphate trace minerals (STM) supplementation on growth performance, carcase parameters and mineral retention in broilers.2. A total of 1792 male Cobb 500 d-old were allocated in a completely randomised trial design to one of eight dietary treatments with eight replicates per treatment. The HTM sources used were two levels of Cu hydroxychloride (CHC) (low and high), combined with three levels of Zn hydroxychloride (ZHC) (low, med and high) and two additional treatments STM; Cu sulphate monohydrate (CSM) (low and high) combined with high Zn sulphate monohydrate (ZSM). At 21 and 42 d-old growth performance was evaluated. Additionally, at 42 d-old the carcase traits, meat quality, apparent ileal absorption and activity of antioxidant enzymes were accessed.3. A data showed that broilers receiving high-CHC had higher body weight, weight gain and better feed conversion ratio as compared to low-CHC at 21 d-old. On day 42, the feed conversion ratio was improved for birds supplemented with high-CHC in diets containing med-ZHC, as compared to low-CHC.4. Dietary Cu increased the redness of breast colour at the level of high-CHC compared to low-CHC. Greater results were observed on carcase traits for the med-ZHC group as compared to low- or high-ZHC. The ceruloplasmin activity in serum increased in the high-CSM diets containing high-ZSM as compared to low-CSM. The AIA of Cu was higher in broilers supplemented with high-CHC containing med-ZHC as compared to low-CHC. Otherwise, the AIA of Zn increased in broilers fed low-CHC containing low- or med-ZHC as compared to high-CHC.5. The trial showed that mineral trace supplementation of broilers diets with high-CHC (150 mg/kg) and low-ZHC (80 mg/kg) was a good alternative to replace sulphate mineral sources in diets.

Myosin Va (MyoVa) is an actin-based molecular motor abundantly found at the centrosome. However, the role of MyoVa at this organelle has been elusive due to the lack of evidence on interacting partners or functional data. Herein, we combined yeast two-hybrid screen, biochemical studies and cellular assays to demonstrate that MyoVa interacts with RPGRIP1L, a cilia-centrosomal protein that controls ciliary signaling and positioning. MyoVa binds to the C2 domains of RPGRIP1L via residues located near or in the Rab11a-binding site, a conserved site in the globular tail domain (GTD) from class V myosins. According to proximity ligation assays, MyoVa and RPGRIP1L can interact near the cilium base in ciliated RPE cells. Furthermore, we showed that RPE cells expressing dominant-negative constructs of MyoVa are mostly unciliated, providing the first experimental evidence about a possible link between this molecular motor and cilia-related processes.

RESUMO

Dermatophytes are fungi responsible for a disease known as dermatophytosis. Biofilms are sessile microbial communities surrounded by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) with increased resistance to antimicrobial agents and host defenses. This paper describes, for the first time, the characteristics of Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes biofilms. Biofilm formation was analyzed by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) as well as by staining with crystal violet and safranin. Metabolic activity was determined using the XTT reduction assay. Both species were able to form mature biofilms in 72 h. T. rubrum biofilm produced more biomass and EPS and was denser than T. mentagrophytes biofilm. The SEM results demonstrated a coordinated network of hyphae in all directions, embedded within EPS in some areas. Research and characterization of biofilms formed by dermatophytes may contribute to the search of new drugs for the treatment of these mycoses and might inform future revisions with respect to the dose and duration of treatment of currently available antifungals.

BACKGROUND: Mazabraud's syndrome was first described, by Mazabraud et al. as a rare disease, associated with single or multiple intramuscular myxomas with monostotic or polyostotic forms of fibrous dyplasia, PURPOSE: Reports of this syndrome is rare and usually associated with myoxomatas. The authors would want to report the occurrence of this rare case associated with a hamartoma as basis for record and future studies. METHOD: An adult male came to the institution 4 years ago complaining of a right unilateral proptosis that he had since childhood. However, proptosis progressed in a month's time accompanied by right eye redness. Right eye was congested with a palpable firm mass on the right lower lid. Best corrected visual acuity was 6/15-2. Pupillary examination revealed the presence of RAPD on the right eye. Exophthalmometry revealed a 10 mm proptosis. EOMS were restricted on the right eye and diplopia was noted in all gazes. Ishihara test showed 14/15 for the right eye. CT SCAN and MRI confirmed a mild inflammatory extraconal or intramuscular mass in the right obito-retrobulbar region. Bony changes seen in the right zygoma, sphenoid bone and squamous part of the temporal bone with extensive bone mineralization. The patient underwent a right lateral orbitotomy with biopsy and debulking of the inferior orbital mass. Histopathology revealed a hamartomatous lesion. CONCLUSION: Due to the associated soft tissue lesion with multiple craniofacial bone changes, this case may be considered a variant of Mazabraud's Syndrome. The associated hamatomatous lesion may be a rare occurrence that should be noted.

RESUMO

Insecticide resistance is an evolutionary response of specific insect populations subjected to exposure and consequent selection by an insecticide. As such, this phenomenon is important as a biomonitoring strategy and also has economical importance in the case of insect-pests by compromising their control. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of bilateral traits is a measure of developmental instability also suggested as a monitoring tool for environmental pollution with potential consequences for fitness. Responses to selective agents might have pleiotropic effects influencing development and phenotype, which has yet to be examined for agricultural insecticides and insect-pests. Higher levels of FA are expected in the insecticide-resistant strains, which are usually at a selective disadvantage, relative to susceptible strains, in the absence of the insecticide. Two insecticide-resistant strains and an insecticide-susceptible strain of the maize pest insect Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were subjected to FA measurements in 12 traits of wing veins and tibias of 100 individuals of both sexes of each strain. The insecticide-resistant strains showed lower FA than the susceptible strain, in contrast with the initial expectation. An extended period of insecticide selection probably led to the evolution of fitness-modifier genes improving the performance of the resistant genotypes, reducing their FA levels, and leading to their eventual fixation in the population. In addition, one insecticide-resistant strain and the insecticide-susceptible strain showed significant differences in FA between sexes, with more symmetrical males suggesting possible sexual selection by the females. The observed results have potential consequences for insecticide-resistance evolution and dispersal.
